With the big rise both in income and in spending on personal consumption, urban and rural residents have visibly improved their consumption quality. Most of the residents have gradually changed their traditional consumer philosophies and diversified consumption habits. They have begun to purchase high and medium-grade quality consumer goods, which shows that they are now moving into the stage of pursing a quality life. In recent years, the urban and rural residents in Xinjiang have developed the following features in their consumption:

  1. Stressing nutrition and quality in food consumption

As the basic need of having enough to eat is met, food consumption is moving in the direction of quality, healthy and nutritious diet. In 2011, the per capita grain consumption in the rural area was 236.81 kilograms. Fine grains accounted for 94.2% of the total, up by 8 percentage points from 1990. The per capita consumption of oils and fats, meat and poultry, eggs, fruits and fruit products in 2011 was 12.77 kg, 17.87 kg, 2.96 kg and 22.64 kg respectively. In 2012, the per capita food spending among farmers and herds- men in Xinj iang was RMB 1,891 yuan, up by RMB 302 yuan than 2011. In their food structure, the share of staple food is continuing to drop while that of non-staple foodstuff is continuing to grow up.

Since the introduction of reform and opening-up policy, as they earn more income and have a faster tempo in their life and work, urban residents pay more and more attention to nutrition, convenience and diversity in their diet, and pursue a food style of high protein, high calories and low fat. Thanks to the effective government project of “vegetable basket’’,food consumption by urban residents has remarkably improved both qualitatively and quantitatively.

  1. Highlighting individuality and seeking high taste in clothes consumption

Over the recent years, both urban and rural residents tend to buy more ready-made clothes and top or medium-grade clothes. They lay increasing stress on the style, design and color of clothes, and the share of ready-made clothes has gone up considerably in their total spending on apparel. In 2010, the per capita clothes spending among farmers and herdsmen in Xinjiang was RMB 303.66 yuan, up by RMB 234.25 yuan Shanghai reise tourismus, or 3.3 times from that in 1989. The past pattern of “one piece of clothes for several seasons” is replaced by “multiple pieces of clothes for one season” Ready-made clothes, fashionable dresses and leather shoes are already household items in rural families. The rural population is now in a transition from“wearing clothes to keep warm” to “wearing nice clothes”.
